Is removing GIMP really a good idea?

Is removing GIMP from future distros really a good idea or should the GUI just be updated?

fmardones 12-15-2009 07:21 PM

and who said is going to be removed? Gimp is a very handy tool, shouldn't be removed.

Elv13 12-15-2009 08:10 PM

Well, it's too advanced and complicated for most users. It also take some space, so I am fine with the Ubuntu decision to remove it from default install.

MTK358 12-15-2009 08:13 PM

Don't install GIMP by default in a distro? No way!

John VV 12-15-2009 09:52 PM

boo-hoo The Gimp is to hard to use....

and while we are at it kde it too different to learn so lets not install that
Gnome is not Windows 7 so people will need to LEARN something new , so lets not install that too...

Croping a picture in Kolourpaint like way less time than gimp, for normal user, such simple operation should not be buried down in menu and have "complex" dialog to access it. I know that some people like GIMP, and I am not of them, even if I learning it over the years. Its too complex for resizing and croping an image thats all.

fmardones 12-15-2009 10:41 PM

...maybe should be removed, since is not a basic tool (more like Photoshop than MSPaint). After all, if anyone want Gimp can get it from the repos (via yum or apt).

I understand some of the answers, but I don't understand the question......

@sndlinux;
What distros are you referring to?
How is updating the GUI relevant to a decision to include/not include GIMP?

evo2 12-16-2009 12:46 AM

Remove something because some people find it hard to use? WTF? I find it difficult to program in perl, but find python much easier. Perhaps perl should be removed from my distro?

Bad move imho. Ubuntu is targeted with a spoon-feeding attitude, this will surely disappoint a lot of users who want stuff ootb.

We'll I guess I should not be surprised, this is after all distro that has different install images for different window managers. Perhaps they can now also have with gimp and without gimp images too ;-)

Nonsense!!! I can crop and scale in GIMP faster than I could even spell "Kolourpaint".

There is no "complex dialog" for cropping in GIMP.
type "R" for rectangle select
select the area to crop
Rt-click, select image--->crop selection

I can think of reasons not to like GIMP, but this would never make the list.

sndlinux 12-16-2009 08:25 PM

Sorry, I guess I should have been more clear...I heard that Ubuntu might not have GIMP in the next release because its too complex for new users. The thinking was that Linux needs an entry level MS Paint type application. I wondered why not just redesign the GUI to make access to the most basic "MS Paint" type features easier for newbies.
