Is it possible to switch lirc modes with a script?

I have a creative infra remote control with very limited buttons. To switch modes ( for example tv mode or movie mode) I have to :

begin
remote = XXXX
button = button1
program = irexec
config = irexec sleep 0
mode = tv
end

begin
remote = XXXX
button = button2
program = irexec
config = irexec sleep 0
mode = movie
end

The irexec sleep is only so irexec will have something to do. It is the mode switching that is important to me. This method is a waste of one good button on my remote though. If it possible to switch to movie or tv mode with a script that irexec will run then that is the better solution. I can put a script after config = for setting tv mode and then follow it with another script for setting movie mode so that lirc will alternate running these two scripts when I press the button repeatedly. Thanks
