Is it okay to remove sendmail?

Greetings everyone...

In my RH 9 package selection, I just unchecked the whole Mail Server category and I believe this uninstalled sendmail (as well as everything else that came by default when it was checked.

Is it okay to do so (uninstall any and all mail server applications)?

I'm just a regular desktop user and I have no idea what sendmail does or if it's okay to remove... I just access e-mail through my browser, though eventually I may want to use Thunderbird....

So is it?

Thanks in advance....

- Bryan

The users on your desktop communicate with each other through sendmail. For example, when a cron job fails cron sends a message to root that there was a problem in cron. If you are running without sendmail it means that you will have a harder time fixing some of the problems with your system because you won't have all of the error messages.

Oh, well I found out that when I unchecked sendmail (and the mail-server group) Red Hat's package manager installed postfix in place of sendmail (that is, without asking me, as if sensing I was about to commit a boo boo).

I take it postfix is similar to sendmail and what took place (postfix replacing sendmail) covered up for my mistake?

Thanks again,

- Bryan
