Question Is it ok to have multiple anti-virus programs installed in Ubuntu at once?

Hi.

Is it ok to have multiple anti-virus programs installed in Ubuntu? I know that it is not recommended in Windows to have multiple antivirus apps but I was wondering what the situation with GNU/Linux is.

Thanks.

It is okay to have multiple anti-virus programs installed. Possibly not all that useful!

The issues result from having multiple scanners doing on-demand scanning (ie, scanning on the fly, so called 'real-time'). It can be a significant performance hit, they may intercept system calls in incompatible ways, and there is also the risk that one scanner will detect another as malware (since the behaviour of a scanning program can resemble the behaviour of a virus). So if you do install multiple anti-virus programs, no more than one should have any 'real-time' functionality enabled.

It's okay to have multiple AV programs installed, even on Windows. It's not okay to have more than one running at a time. They don't work and play well with each other.
