Is AVIRA ANTI-VIRUS FOR LINUX NECESSARY?

Dear friends,
I am a newbie and have installed Ubuntu10.10 (as a dual-boot with Win.XP Pro) and am stunned at the ease of use! The software offered is staggering and great! Have any senior members felt the need to install AVIRA's linux anti virus software? Will be grateful for the responses. Thanks!
regards,
vyver.

only if you want to spend cash for no reason

you can BUT it only will look for Microsoft viruses , that will not run on any version of Linux

installing "rkhunter" and " ckrootkit" and running them every few months .
Then configure the installed app-guard , and you should be fine

To,Drakeo,
Thanks! I have Avast Internet security suite in place for the XP in my dual-boot.

To,John VV,
Thank you for the tips you gave about the security scenario for Ubuntu. The Avira A-V Linux has a free version, that's why i asked the question! Otherwise, i wouldn't have picked your "Geek"minds on this! If a medical consultant like me,aged 49 years decides to make the transition to Linux (Ubuntu10.10) and finds it "relatively easy" ,you can imagine the hordes of non-Geeks waiting to jump ship(Windows)! Who knows, even Ballmer who said"Linux is like cancer" may try it! (My smileys are not co-operating!http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-free-antivirus

Haha..true.
But man,how can you use opensuse? it's a bulky distro that looks/feels like garbage...(no offense)

OT
"But man,how can you use opensuse"
giving it a spin after fedora 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11, Arch , CentOS 5.3,5.4,5.5

No anti virus for linux. Period. Install the s/w mentioned. If you are really paranoid use tripwire or similliar software.
Hope this helps.
