irw kills lircd on Ubuntu 7.04 (w/MythTV)

Hi all,
I'm trying to setup a homebrew serial IR receiver to work with a MythTV installation on Ubuntu 7.04. I've been following the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Install_Lirc_Feisty, but when I get to the part that has me start lircd and run irw, I run into problems that I'm too naive to fix.

So when I run "sudo /usr/sbin/lircd -n --driver=default -d /dev/lirc0", I get the following response:

lircd-0.8.2-CVS[8678]: repeat_gap will be ignored if CONST_LENGTH flag is set
lircd-0.8.2-CVS[8678]: lircd(userspace) ready

Then in another terminal (tab), I run "irw", which kills the lircd command immediately and generates the following lines in the first tab:

lircd-0.8.2-CVS[8678]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd-0.8.2-CVS[8678]: could not open /dev/lirc0
lircd-0.8.2-CVS[8678]: default_init(): Device or resource busy
lircd-0.8.2-CVS[8678]: caught signal
Terminated

"lsmod | grep lirc" shows the following:

lirc_serial 14080 0
lirc_dev 15988 1 lirc_serial

"dmesg" shows the following new lines:

[92062.233994] IRQ handler type mismatch for IRQ 3

[92062.234600] lirc_serial: IRQ 3 busy

I don't know enough about serial ports and IRQs to know why IRQ 3 is busy.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
