IRC safety

Hi,

I am a newbie with IRC. Is IRC safe to use?

Is it safe to have a DCC chat?
Some website said that even a DCC chat is not safe, but I am not so sure.

As long as i don't accept files i should be safe right?

Define safe. There could be a potential exploit in your IRC
client. People will be shown your IP which can become ugly.

Cheers,
Tink

IRC is generally seen as safe, as long as you don't do anything stupid.

Make sure the client you use is up to date, older versions may have exploits (but this is true with any app with online capabilities).

Don't accept things from people you don't know. People can be jerks, and try to mess with your system.

Stay on more secure networks. Check around, most decent IRC networks mask your address, making it difficult for people to try to attack you.

Use DCC only with people you trust. DCC exposes your IP address, thus allowing for an attack.
