iPod doesn't like to mount, and the gtkpod freezes...

Hello all!
I have a new viPod and I am running Mepis 3.3.1 (linux kernel 2.6.10) and gtkpod 0.99.?

When I plug in my iPod I can see it appear and disappear three times in my Devices folder in Konqueror, and then its gone. So i unplug and replug, and go through it all again. If I plug it in and try to mount it (with mouse click) during one of those brief moments of appearance, it *usually* gives me "/dev/sda2 no such device" or something.

OCCASIONALLY I can get it to mount with this click method (using gtkpod to mount it doesn't want to work, since its never "there" when gtkpod tries to do the mounting). When that's working, I can open gtkpod and transfer songs, but soon after I get a "input/output error" and then its frozen and I have to start again.

Any ideas? Should I update my kernel? Are my USB ports bad (all four of them?)

Thanks guys!

when i plug my ipod nano into my slackware box, it creates a /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Wierd eh?

It does mount on /dev/sda2 and gtkpod does work though.

I would not like to harzard a guess as to what causes this behaviour.

are your ports usb 1.1 or 2.0?

eh, good question. I'd like to think usb2.0 since its a new box/moboard and i probably would have chosen one with usb2.0, but it wasn't a **super** quality board, so i am not positive...

after i finally force it to mount (by clicking in konq) and get gtkpod to read it, i loaded a bunch of songs. The "copying" dialog (lower-left corner) kinda goes blank after song 70 of 4500, and if I unplug it at this point nothing is not listed in gtkpod (but it is on the ipod). so i just left it for a day, and everything did load, even if the progress box isn't there...
