Internet Explorer 6.1 and Squid

Can anybody offer any suggestions please......
I run a schools network of about 250 windows 98 workstations. I built a Redhat 8 box and installed and configured squid to run as a caching proxy server. I added SMB_AUTH so that each user had to "log-in" to use the internet and so that we could track where they were going.
This combination worked extremely well with Internet explorer 5.5.
I have now had to upgrade IE to version 6.1.
Now, after entering their username and password, the user is presented with a page "page cannot be displayed - DNS error". But, If the user then clicks refresh, the page loads ....
Is there a know issue and solution for this problem ???
