Internet connection set up after installing Linux mint 9

I have just set up Linux mint 9 on my desktop and now to begin with other applications, I need to set up an internet connection and tried this with the Bigpond installation CD but nothing happened. How do I set up an internet connection? I have a wireless connection with bigpond ( Telstra).

Is your wireless card recognised and installed by mint? Do you see a wireless symbol in your system tray? If yes, left click it, do you see any wireless networks listed? If the answer is 'no' to the previous question start a terminal session, then type: iwconfig or ifconfig you might see something like: eth0 (this is your ethernet port) lo (this is your local loopback) and possibly wlan0 (this will be your wireless card).

Mint and ubuntu are almost the same so also search for ubuntu.

I realised that just connecting the ethernet cable would solve the problem. I was trying to load the software which is otherwise required in windows.
