International Character sets in Pine / Konsole

I use Pine 4.44 runnning in KDE's Konsole to check my email (my distro. is RH9). I have noticed that accented characters are improperly displayed in my emails. They either appear as little boxes, or sometimes as short nonsense strings, or sometimes they "eat" the preceeding or following characters when I try to compose text. I have already changed the Pine's character set to ISO-8859-1, which according to everything I've read should be the proper character set to display international accented characters. I have also tried all the available fonts in the Konsole "Font" menu, to no avail. Accented characters display properly in the rest of my programs (text editors, web browser, etc.), but not in Pine. I am not sure if this is an issue with Pine itself, or with Konsole, since I am running Pine from Konsole. Has anyone else encountered similar problems or does anyone have any suggestions?
