Intel 965GM X boundary issues in Fedora 8
Hi everybody, long time reader, first time poster. This one has me pretty stumped
I have just purchased a Toshiba Satellite U300-FA3 (Canadian Exclusive) This laptop uses the Intel 965GM chipset. I am using Fedora 8 32-bit I am using kernel 2.6.24.3-12.fc8 I am using xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-42.fc8 I am using the "intel" display module I have installed all available updates via YUM I have been having issues with X defining its boundries (for maximizing windows, setting the gnome-panel position, etc.) The boundaries seem set to 1024x768 instead of my resolution, 1280x800 A screenshot of my issue can be found here http://pastebox.area526.com/Screenshot.jpg Any advice or help anyone could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! apotrebka lspci -v 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub (rev 03) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Unknown device ff50 Flags: bus master, References to the 965gm card and linux suggest that you need the 915resolution package. That package notes:
Quote:
Yau also have this issue in fedora forums. |
Compiz works. I get the same boundary issue regardless of whether I use Compiz or not. I only tried Compiz and Metacity as those are the only two I am aware of.
I have also tried using the 915resolution package, it produced the same results Edit: It works normally using the vesa driver. |
So we've narrowed it down to the intel driver... curiously, while I can find no end of issues with intel cards, I cannot find anyone else with your particular problem. In particular, reports on your mobo indicate that everything is fine.
You may need a bios update, though. Note: compiz uses metacity. Which leads to the possibility of using emerald instead. You could have a play with the driver settings... eg. Option "Legacy3D" "Off" (this may not work for i965) ... more fancy settings... Option "PageFlip" "On" Option "TripleBuffer" "On" Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" see man intel for what they do. |
Hey:)I have the same toshiba laptop and have the same problem as you. Did you find a solution to the problem?
|
Yes: we have no solution. At least, nothing confirmed. Last suggestion was to use Emerald, or a different window manager.
|
Hi everybody,
Sorry, I haven't been able to post back lately. I haven't been able to sit down long enough to post this reply. I havent tried Emerald yet, but I don't think that's the issue as this problem occurs even at the Login screen. As far as I understand, no window manager is even being run at that point, but I could be wrong. I'll try installing emerald as soon as I can and see what transpires. |
Solved!
Hey, I found your post in the Fedora Forums and I found a fix as I was having the same problem as you were. I found the fix here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=610407
It says that this fix is not needed for Ubuntu 8.04 (subsequently Fedora 8/9), but this isn't true. Just make sure to change the keyboard layout to 'us' and to not leave it at 'se' as that will create some problems for you. Regards, Brandon |
