Question Intalling own software? Self making packages?

This has kept me wondering, I know how I get packages from the Internet and install them on my own machine.

But how do I make a package myself? A package that can be installed on other people's machines?

Like a tarball file or an rpm/deb package file? So I can send it to a friend or something.

Now, I don't have such yet, but I think that I might come into such complicates. So I was just wondering how this could be done.

Have a look at checkinstall ... it allows you to roll RPM, DEB
and Slack-TGZ at the end of a compilation process (it replaces
the "make install" and creates the respective package).

Thanks, that's quite cool.

But I was wondering how to do it the 'professional' way?

Just so I had that kind of information too.

I create my own rpms for Fedora Core and the guide is available from rpm.org and fedora developers guide. If you are creating rpms for other distros, then you will have to read their documentation for creating distro specific rpms.
