Question Installing Yahoo Messenger on Mandrake 8.1

BACKGROUND

I am new to Linux - have worked with Microsoft OS's since 95.

I installed Mandrake 8.1 last night. I'm an electronics engineer but have decided to switch to PC's. I'd like to learn coding and programming and was told Unix/Linux would be a better option than Microsoft.

I'm sure there will be many questions to come up, but my first is getting yahoo messenger installed so I can communicate with friends and family while I'm learning. I only have 1 machine but have 2 hard drives and Microsoft XP loaded on the second drive. I want to be able to use yahoo without booting into windows as I want to slowly ween myself away from Microsoft.

I'm running in the KDE desktop invironment with just a standard user account.

PROBLEM

messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/unix.html#debian

I downloaded the file. I can browse to the file and click on it I get a box asking to open with and has many options including run in terminal. <-- not sure what to do I cancelled and tried to follow the directions.

I logged out and typed "root" as the username and entered the password. I came to a graphical desktop with a warning telling me it was not wise to run in root. I click "run command" and typed the code as they said
"dpkg -i ymessenger_1.0.4_1_i386.deb"

and get an error - Could not run the specified command.

All help is welcome.

Thanks.

you shouldnt try to install files in debian format on mandrake (i guess...)
have you tried installing gaim (gaim.sourceforge.net), and connecting to yahoo messenger using gaim as the client?
and btw, if you want to run something as root, you shouldn't logout and then login to x in the root account.
you should open up a terminal, then type "su" and enter your root password.
you are then left with a terminal using the root account.
to close the root session in the terminal run "exit" in the terminal.
