hi John VV,

im looking at the links that you provided. i followed the instructions to check the package name using this:
# rpm -qpil --changelog --scripts packagename.rpm | less

i realised the rpm was built for openSuse while im using Suse Linux 11 Enterprise Server. does it matter?

here is the full log report:

Summary : A small tool to capture things going on on an X-Windows display
Description :
Xvidcap is a tool that can capture movement on an X11 display. It works in two distinct modes:
It can capture to single frames (like a number of jpeg images) or it can encode the captured frames to a video on-line.

It is intended to be a standards-based alternative to tools like Lotus ScreenCam for UNIX platforms.
On-line encoding is done through FFMPEG and also allows for audio grabbing on OSS compatible systems.

SUSE uses the GUI for MOST things
( it is very GUI centric)

in yast ( the add and remove software)
-- the thing that looks like the windows "start" ( if KDE is the desktop-- it is by default.)
computer/ add and remove software
from that you can odd a repo

or

there is a link to add repos ( add repositories)
from the yast GUI
type in the info for the suse 11.2 (SELD 11 sp2)

or
copy/paste the multimedia text "packman-multimedia.repo" file to
/etc/zypp/repos.d/

then using the GUI in yast set the priorities !!!!!!

from the "add and remove" it is " configure/repositories "
set "packman" to say 80 ( default is 99)

this will prevent packman from REPLACING system files from SELD 11.2 with newer and incompatible versions

--- suse uses the GUI for most things ----
