Question Installing XFree86 4.2.0 Dual Monitors not sleeping

I am running Redhat 7.2and I have a Matrox G550 dual head video card. When my computer goes to sleep it only turns of one of the monitors. This is very irritating. I contacted Matrox support . They told me to try and install XFree86 4.2.0 to correct the problem. I am not sure that is going to work but I am willing to give it a try. I have read all of the instructions for installing it and I need to know how to boot my machine so that it go into command line mode and does not start the gui. I need to install XFree86 with the gui stopped. So i geuss my question is how do I get my machine not to go straight into the gui or how do I quit the gui and go to a command line. Thanks. Also if you know anything about why both monitors will not go to sleep that would be helpful also.
