Installing x-window and kde from CLI

I have debain 3.0 basic install on my Thinkpad. Now I want the GUI interface. I am trying to install with no luck. Here is what I have done:

ran apt-cdrom add with all 7 CDs.

Then I ran apt-get -s install x-window-system kde with no errors

Then I did: apt-get install x-window-system kde

And got (after it asked me to confirm installation):

hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x30
hdc: ATAPI reset complete
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc) sector 1165320

That will keep repeating until I ctrl+C it.

Any ideas?

Can you use the ftp instead? Just add,
deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
to you /etc/apt/sources.list.
Your problem could be with the actual disc, also you could try to turn DMA on/off and see if that helps.

I have a PCMCIA NIC card and none of that is setup yet.

What is DMA?

The CD should be OKAY because I did the install from it.
