Installing X from source

I am in the middle of compiling X by source, because i couldn't get my Geforce3 to work (when loading nvidia driver, computer crashes entirely).
Well, I didn't get to the point where I can type make install so I have a question: since many apps are based on the xlibs, do I need to recompile everything or does eg KDE3 still work when the new X is installed? Currently, x 4.2 from SuSe 8 is installed.
Thanks

kde3 should work after you have installed x

Thanks Phonics3k. Everything still works - except 3d acceleration :(:(
So, the problem isn't the driver, not x.... what else could it be???????

have you built the "DRI" part of Xfree86?

thats what supports 3d accelaration

I enabled it - but the X couldn't start then - I have postet this problem a while ago: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=21868
I'm right now trying to use dri as well... it seems that glx and nvidia load up just fine. Thanks

Why are you trying to use DRI with a card that doesn't support it - read the Nvidia driver README and INSTALL files I think they tell you this - if they don't read the DRI information that comes with the Kernel, or the DRI webpages (http://dri.sourceforge.net/ ) - they will tell you for definite.

Hope this helps

Matt
