The reason for Ubuntu 10.04 is it has a cnc router component I want to use.

Fair enough. In puppy. Because I am posting from Slack0 5.6 running inside of Windows 7 on this laptop.
There is
Menu>System>pup-sysinfo
You gave me generic ram specs but no installed ram specs. This matters because Ubuntu sucks up the ram.
If me in your shoes. I would try Lubuntu 10.04. But. The funny thing is. I don't think their software
manager will download your cnc router component because it is not supported anymore.
a 12.04 version should have the same cnc router component and is still supported so the software center/synaptic package manager
will be more applicable. if 1 gig of ram is what you have. And, a 1 gig CPU. Then a lightweight window manager of Ubuntu 12.04 spin off is what I would suggest. Also I would use puppy linux gparted in a live session or Ubuntu in a live session to make a swap partition of 2 gig before running the gui installer or trying to run live. The lightest version of 12.04 I can think of is

I did not feel like wiping out my 4 primary Compaq partitions. I did not want to waste a usb drive or have one sticking outside
of this laptop. So I run Linux inside of Windows 7 as a program install instead of on it's own partition.
If this laptop would have booted off of my SD card. I would have used my

I had my own upstream rowing going on also

but I got it sorted.
I wish you good luck with your endeavors. Happy trails, Rok
P.S.> They make a 10.04 minimal cd live installer also. Also, the exact name of the cnc router program may
help because Ubuntu shows on the web what versions that particular package is included in their repos.
