installing the make command on suse linux

hi,

i wanted to install the make command / programm on suse linux 9.1 as suse isnt shipped out with any compilers installed, hence the make-command is unknown to the system.

So i did the following:

I installed the glib-devel packages:

glib2-devel-2.2.3-117.i586.rpm
glibc-devel-2.3.3-98.i586.rpm

then the gcc-compilers:

gcc-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm libstdc++-devel-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm
gcc-c++-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm

Then i downloaded the make - programm from
the gnu - homepage

Then i ran : ./configure, which was successfull without error
Now i called the install-script build.sh, (as i dont have a make-command on the system) just like the make-manual said, then i got the following console-output:

linux:/home/whatever/system/make/make-3.80 # ./build.sh
compiling ar.c...
compiling arscan.c...
compiling commands.c...
compiling default.c...
compiling dir.c...
compiling expand.c...
compiling file.c...
compiling function.c...
compiling getopt.c...
compiling getopt1.c...
compiling implicit.c...
compiling job.c...
compiling main.c...
compiling misc.c...
compiling read.c...
compiling remake.c...
compiling rule.c...
compiling signame.c...
compiling variable.c...
compiling version.c...
compiling vpath.c...
compiling hash.c...
compiling remote-@REMOTE@.c...
gcc: ./remote-@REMOTE@.c: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
gcc: no input files
linux:/home/whatever/system/make/make-3.80 #

what does this mean? the gcc - command is known to the system,
when i type gc and do an autocompletion i see:

linux:/home/whatever/system/make/make-3.80 # gc
gcc gccbug gcov

as i said , i did the exakt way which was described in the install-manual, so right now i dont know what to do

thanks for help
