installing suse to nec laptop

Greetings: I am trying to install Suse 6.3 to an NEC Versa 2405 with 24 meg ram and an 800 meg HD. A minimum install loads fine. However I am VERY Comand Line Challanged and need to get X with either KDE or Gnome to run. When I try to install either I am informed that I do not have enough Drive space.
is there some way to cut either of these down to size? After the minimum install I should have a couple of hundred Megs left on the drive because it tells me it is installing 147 meg of programs to
the drive:newbie:  :study: where can I go

Welcome to LQ, Headturner.

You may have an 800Mb harddrive and only appear to have used 147Mb of it (thus leaving 653Mb free), but I can guarantee that some of that will be taken up by a Swap partition - 24Mb of RAM is really quite small. X itself if really quite large, and certainly if you want KDE or Gnome you're gonna be running into some serious space issues - as you have already found out! May I suggest that, if possible you look at something that is a little less heavy? There is something called TinyX around somewhere that aims to be both lightweight on RAM and on HD space... and perhaps a Window Manager that isn't quite so huge? There are plenty of threads around on lightweight window managers.

Just a thought.

Greetings: Suse set my partitions to - /dev/hda1 - 16.73MB /dev/hda2 Swap 127.97MB and /dev/hda3 - 631.97MB
127 MB seems a bit much to me for a system with 24MB of ramm?
How would one go about changing the default settings for this distro? Or at least how it sets up on my machine?
Thanks much for your reply Thymox
