Start by using your package manager. This is different on each distro, but is usually found by looking in the menus for something like "install software".
There are three basic installation methods--easiest first: --package manager that comes with the distro --download and run an install script --download and compile on your system Give us an example of what SW you want, and we can give a more detailed example. (Tell us what distro also) |

.exe is a Windows executable. Not normally useful in Linux. Does your distro use RPM as the package manager? If so, to install an .rpm file, simply do this: rpm -i filename (enter the name of the file without the .rpm suffix) man rpm for more details Otherwise, tell us what IS your package manager. |
.exe file... installing on linux.
go to www.codeweavers.com then go to products next downloads next download crossover office trail version. you can easily install *.exe files on linux....including ftp and mail servers of windows too. other option: download wine tar file from wine head quarters. as a user for example: localhost$ wine serVftp*.exe( you can install like this) |
Better learn to use linux software before wine - can't run everything thru wine

I've just had a thought regarding your distro of choice. It would probably be better for you to start with one of the popular distros like Suse, Mandriva, Fedora or Ubuntu and then move on to other distros once you have grasped the basics. These distros have big communities so help is always readily available. Just a thought.
