Installing PuTTY on SuSE 9.1

First posting from a total NOOB...I'm running SuSE 9.1 on a IBM Thinkpad. I have downloaded the putty_0.58.orig.tar.gz file and successfully run the "tar xzvf putty_0.58.orig.tar.gz" command, but then what do I do..?.. I tried the ./configure, but I get "No such file or directory" message. I'm in "su" mode and when I do a "ls" I see the files listed (I don't see configure, only config.c)

Kind Regards....bitrouter

Ok downloaded it to /home/ace/System/putty

Then right clicked on it and then went into the Extract menu and chose Extract to putty-0.58, (i don't like using the konsole to extract things) Then opened the created folder, found another folder in it called putty-0.58, went into there, then went into the unix folder until i was here:

/home/ace/System/putty/putty-0.58/putty-0.58/unix

then i opened konsole

[ace@X16 ~]$ su
Password:
[root@X16 ace]# cd /home/ace/System/putty/putty-0.58/putty-0.58/unix
[root@X16 unix]# make -f Makefile.gtk

Hope this helps

Why not run SSH from the terminal? It should already be installed on your box.

Even better is Suse's GUI for ssh: kssh because then it'll give you a putty-like experience in that options are set via the GUI, and at the same time give you the capability that SSH in *nix gives you. I use ssh from the command line a lot, but I use kssh even more because it remembers the addresses I connect to.

Thanks so much for the replies... as I said ---> me=total noob. (1) I tried the "make -f Makefile.gtk" and I get "command not found". I see the files are there. I su to root, but I don't see the root@directoryname though and I even tried loggin in as root. (2) I am also trying to learn how to install STUFF in general. First I tried the Cisco VPN client and failed on that, so I thought I'd try something easier..HA..HA.. (3) I don't see any kssh program. Kind Regards...bitrouter
