Installing programs

I am new to Linux only had it for a week. P4. 1.6 Ghz, 250 Ram Intel82801BA
Installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
Want to install Audacity 1.2.3.-1 build2 I386.deb I get message: dependency is not satisfied:libid3tag0
cannot install Scribus 1.3.3.7.tar bz2 I exracted the folders to the desktop but "install" is greyed out.
Why is it so difficult and will I have the same problem with other software like Thunderbird.

You just need to install your programs from within the native package manager (such as Synaptic) and let it handle all of the dependency requirements. There is no need to do as you might in Windows and download the desired applications to your desktop separately and then run an install program. Those annoying days are over for you now, lol.

This post has pointed me in the right direction with the issues I am having, SO i have opened synaptic and when to add new package, browsed to my desktop, selected the banshee folder and then clicked add.

What next? if i browse through the folders everythingis greyed out.....
