why don't you just use the rpm packages we (I work for Opera) provide? Any particular reason you have selected to use the tar. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the tar packages and they provide a wider range of install options but if you are new to Linux I would start with the packages that are native to your distro.

Since I am a newbie, I was trying to get experience downloading and installing via the command line. That is the reason I did it that way. That is cool that you work for Opera! And thank you for the advice! I do feel like I made things complicated, but it was a great learning experience.
