Installing Nvidia drivers on SuSE 9.0

Hi. I'm searched for help all over google and have seen nothing but posts with people experiencing the same frustration as myself at installing this driver.

Ok here's the problem.

I downloaded the package: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run
I installed gcc, make and downloaded the kernel-source rpm and installed that.
I booted into failsafe "init 3"
I logged in as "root"
I cd /home/yewneek/Desktop
I sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run
I ran through the nvidia installation

And everything was fine, until I had to sax2 -m 0=nvidia.

sax2 starts initalising and then it says "sax2 starting" but it doesn't. It reboots my PC.

So I log back into KDE 3.1 and I get the following error (this is the full report):

***End Of Report***

This occurs twice when KDE 3.1 is loading and then continues after it is loaded and I am opening programs such as konquerer and xmms. My computer is also running extremely slow and sluggish.

----------------------------------
My computer info is: Advent 3319

Intel Pentium 4, 3.4ghz (FSB800)
512MB DDR Ram
Geforce 5600XT 256MB

Running kernel 2.4.21-286-smp4G
----------------------------------

That's it. I'm a complete newbie, so all my resources are exhausted, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not so familiar with Suse but I'll have a go.

You might editing /ect/X11/xorg.conf manually instead of using one Suse's graphical tools. Open up a terminal, su to root then open the file on Kedit or whatever. Scroll down to the section "Display" and look for a line that says driver=<something>. Change the something to "nvidia" and save the file.

Of course if you open the file and find that it's already set to nvidia then that wont help. If that fails, you could try installing an older version of the driver, that often works.

Hope that helps.
