installing newer version of programs

after you install a newer version of programs, like GD library, do you usually remove the older version? if so, how do you trace back to what was installed?

Usually you just run ./configure and make and make install and everything usually goes well. Don't try to delete things, especailly old libraries, because you may mess things up (it would also prove to be quite difficult).
