What's you question? If you let us know specifically what your trying to do then we can help.

1. gunzip is usually in bin.
2. install an rpm like this: rpm -ivh package_name

be a bit more specific about what you need ok...

it's precompiled there is nothing to install, assuming you got the daily binary build or similar. just decompress it to /usr/local/phoenix or similar and it's done...

ghostpersonofunverifiedgender, you can download a file to anywhere, you don't normally use gunzip, but "tar zxvf file.tar.gz" instead, change to the directory that is created and go from there. search this site for a billion identical answers.

To decompress a tar.gz you can do this:

In a console type:
gunzip package_name.tar.gz
tar -xvf package_name.tar

Now you should have a new directory named package_name. You'll find all the files inside...

I unpacked the tarball but how do i run it now?
Which commands do i need for running it and how do i create an icon on the desktop for phoenix?

thx for help

Edit: I managed to run Phoenix but it is pretty uncomfortable to open my Nautilus and to browse through my folders and to start Phoenix.
So how do I create a link to that file on the Desktop?
I am using Window Maker.

thx again

Well ,I tried both ways to install and still won't go.
I even tried it as root. Where can I get gunzip2 at ??
I am trying to install my printer drivers from lexmark and they are TAR.GZ and its says something about ghost script... I have NO idea what they are talking about.
Man this Linux is hard to understand....

Won't go where? You need to tell us what you did, what what the result was if you want us to help you troubleshoot. What are these 'both ways' of installing?

If you had a .tar.gz file then the method that acid_kewpie gave you to unpack it will work fine. I suspect that you are typing something wrong. Please try again, and post EXACTLY what you typed, and the EXACT error message....

It may seem that way at first but if you stick with it for a bit you will find that a lot of things work better and make a lot more sense than in windows. You need to stop thinking in a windows point and click frame of mind, and unlearn some bad habits...

I suggest that you read this book and do the exercises, it will give you a good working knowledge of the cli and clear up a lot of the confusion you feel right now...

After untarring it please go thru the README file . That will give u instructions as to how to install it. The procedure in most of the cases is to type the following commands:

./configure
make
make install

U have to look it up in the README file
