installing mplayer: problems with gcc 4.x

Hello,

I am running Ubuntu Breezy and I'm trying to install mplayer.

From what I read on the net, mplayer doesn't support the 4.x gcc versions. ... and apparently that's the one I got.

How can I safely downgrade to a 3.x version of gcc? Is it possible to have 2 versions of gcc on the same system? ... or is there a simpler way of installing mplayer than doing it from source?

Thanks !!

Hey!

I googled around and I found a helpful guide that told me how to enable an ubuntu repository and then use the apt-get commmand to install the player.

I got the player now, and the playback of avi files is perfect. However, when I try to play mpeg files, it starts lagging very badly. And when I try to play wmv files, it crashes.

... and as far as I can tell from the error message, it's the gcc compiler that's still to blame.

here's what I get:

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: decode_video
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.

has anyone had this problem? Any ideas on how to correct it?

Thanks !!
