Installing Linux progs (not the first I’m sure)... newbie tearing hair
 

In this case, Linux Rosa and OpenCPN a marine charting application.
I think I must be missing something obvious. Surely this Linux thing, that will run off a memory stick and politely add itself to a PC shouldn't need lines of terminal input to run something not in the Software Manager list?
Tar balls/sudos/make this/unmake that... great for cognoscenti but DOS? in 2016?
Rant over.. can anyone point me at a nice GUI app that will do it for me or is it back to 7?

Not sure what Rosa is. If you give us some more information, we may be able to help.

There is a learning curve to any linux distro. So, if you are not committed to learning, this may be a difficult way for you to go.

If experts have never heard of the version (Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa) we newbies paddling in the shallow end are going to struggle....

It's always a good idea to give the distro name as well as the release name. There are loads of people here who don't use Mint and therefore don't keep up with their release nomenclature. And there are so many obscure distros around these days that people who see a name they've never heard of are more likely to think it's a distro than a release. Of course if you'd posted in the Mint forum...
