Installing Linux on an Exernal Hard Drive

hey there, i need some help. i am about to buy a 250gb external hard drive and i was wondering if i could install a single version of linux on it then plug the drive into the usb and boot from it. i know that the computers bios has to suport usb boot but can it be done? i already have several versions of linux live cds so i guess i could just install them to the drive or download a full os version. i also wanted to know what anyone would recommend which linux i should use. and now that i am thinking, will just an external hard drive be enough to make it work? if you want, you can e-mail me some help and/or post some here. my e-mail address is myakkahacker@yahoo.com

Yep, booting from a usbdrive is perfectly possible. Plenty of Linux distributions even directly support this (particularly livecd-style distros). This is just the first result that comes up on a google for "linux usb hard drive install".

Well, for new users, I like ubuntu best. If you want something smaller, try puppy linux. If you want something more configurable, try gentoo.

i have a 250 gb external hard drive, so memory usage isnt a problem but i am not a very advanced linux user but i am still ok at it. what is most like windows in working? also when i tried to install phlak on it, when i clicked on the hard drive, it asked which folder to store it in and there were no folders so it quited. so i made a folder and then it still didnt work.
