Installing Linux on a Windows 2000 machine

My home computer has Windows 2000 professional on it, working very well I might add, however I would like to install Linux 9 on it.

Is there a way to install Linux 9 onto the computer and have a dual boot. I know there are partitioning issues, but I do not want to reinstall Windows 2000 or lose any of the data on the computer.

Thanks ahead of time.

You can start by repartitioning your harddisk to make space for Linux. Use something nondestructive like Partition Magic to shrink your Win2k partition if it's hogging up you harddisk.

make sure also that you unallocate your available disk space for linux when using partition magic.

I was always told that you should defragment your hard disk before resizing a partition - less chance of any data loss
I can't vouch for that myself though, I just use VMware to install Linux from within Windows...

What distro of 9. Redhat or Mandrake? Mandrake has a nice tool that you can use to let mandrake use unused windows space or even resize partitions.
