Installing Java for Linux

Hi,
I was trying to install Java in my Linux box. I read through both the binfmt_misc.txt and java.txt files in the Documentation folder. A few examples given in binfmt_misc.txt files says to echo some lines to a file called register which will be created. But even as a root user I dont have privilage to write the file register inside the /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc directory. i tried to change the privilage using chmod command but failed to change it.
Are there any other means of installing Java in my linux machine? could you please help?
Thanks in advance,
simmid.
