Installing IceWM

Hi guys,

I am exteremely new to Linux and have just installed SUSE 9.3 and FC4 (64 bit verson) a couple of days back. So you gotta be extremely patient with my super noob questions here.

I am running AMD Athlon XP64 2800+, 768MB DDR 400 RAM, 120GB SATA HD 7200RPM. While FC4 on GNOME runs ok with my system, I wish to experience some instantaneous response. So I started looking at lighter WM at xwinman and I decided on IceWM fro a balance of swiftness and aesthetic. Please comment if you think I am not heading in the right direction.

I have downloaded the RPM for IceWM and it unpack nicely on my harddrive. I tried reading the FAQ, manual and instructions on how to enable the WM, being a noob, they are beyond my understanding. So my questions are:

1. What are the configuration files that I have to edit?
2. Where are those files?
3. If you can tell me what to add to the configuration files would be a plus.

Thanks in advance.

ok ..is this RPM version you downloaded for fedora ?? .......or is it just a source rpm ...
i think RPM can be installed directly in FC4
once you install it ...you can choose the window manager (IceWM) from kdm or gdm ...whichever you use
KDM or GDM is the login place ............the stage where you put in your username and passwd just after bootup
i dont think anymore configuration is required
the same procedure should work in suse
again if the package is source then you will need to compile it first and then install it
look on the net and LQ for more help if required
best of luck

First edit /etc/initab: id:3:initdefault:

Then edit /root/.xinitrc: exec IceWm

reboot and type startx

I downloaded the rpm package from atrpms dot net, under the ATrpms - by Distribution > Fedora Core 4 > icewm, so I suppose they are already customised for FC4?

When I open up the RPMs on my desktop (by clicking it), it run and then ended (and I suppose that the process is successful). And if I were to click on those files again FC4 will say "package already installed". But they didn't appear on my log in screen (where KDE and GNOME are both valid options).

The 2 files I downloaded are:
icewm-1.2.20-9.rhfc4.at.i386.rpm
icewm-themes-1.2.20-9.rhfc4.at.i386.rpm

Thanks for answering.

I can open the first one but not edit it, it says I am not the owner of the file, what should I do?

I can't even access the second directory.

Thanks.

Other FC4 users may benefit from your experience with IceWM on FC4. A follow-up including a how-to for success with this combination would be quite useful and informative.

So sorry that I have not found a way to solve the problem.

My "solution" was, switch to Ubuntu. Synaptic and apt-get in Debian based distributions really make newbie like me much easier to get started.
