gaim installation problems

First I go to install GTk...it tells me i need glib 2.4.2. I install that..ok

Now I need pango

I go to ./configure --prefix=/usr/local and no problem

I try to make it and:
/home/david/pango-1.4.0/pango/.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_type_instance_get_private'
/home/david/pango-1.4.0/pango/.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_type_class_add_private'
/home/david/pango-1.4.0/pango/.libs/libpango-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_unichar_get_mirror_char'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[4]: *** [pango-querymodules] Error 1
make[4]: Leaving directory `/home/david/pango-1.4.0/pango'
make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/david/pango-1.4.0/pango'
make[2]: *** [all] Error 2

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/david/pango-1.4.0'
make: *** [all] Error 2

I'm stuck, and i've been trying to install GTk for a few days now, slowly overcoming problems. But i believe im stuck on this one and am going to need some help...anyone have any ideas?

Try setting these three variables before you compile pango, atk and gtk
Code:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib"
If you close the terminal/shell it will forget so you'll need to reset them if you start again later. You don't need to set --prefix=/usr/local , that's the default install prefix, but it won't do any harm.

Yes, that was it...cant belive i overlooked that..thankyou

now configuring gaim i get:
checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.0.0... no
*** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed.
configure: error:

the only thing i can think of is that i didnt have the libtiff (http://www.remotesensing.org/libtiff/)
available

i ran the config for gtk without the libtiff and it worked fine.

But it cant find gtk installed....hmmm....

ahh it seems even though it states you can compile without the tiff support gaim wont recognize it as a valid install without the tiff support.

wow all this work just to chat while fooling around

For me, following the advice here still didn't solve my pango 1.4.0 installation problems. Running configure with --includedir=/usr/include/glib-2.0/ is what finally made pango install for me. Just thought I'd document it here, in case anyone else has the same problem.
