Installing gphoto2 and libusb-0.1.5

Im having a lot of trouble trying to install gphoto2 on my Xubuntu Linux machine. Its my first time trying to install software on a Linux box and its proving very difficult. I originally went down the route of RPM packages however I soon found that certain packages would not install as dependences weren’t satisfied even though I acquired those packages and installed them. I read on a tutorial (building and installing software on linux) that this can happen as certain libs are not exactly the same version in the two pakages or something like that. So I thought sod it I’ll have a go via source code. I download the latest version of gphoto2-suite and ran. /configure and found that I needed to install libusb-0.1.5 as the version on my system was version 0.1.4. I thought no problem I’ll download the correct version, which I did, I untared it and the files were placed in the /usr/lib directory. I then ran ./configure again and the same error was returned. Looking in the archive libusb-0.1.5 there I two object files I believe they are called – but the file names are libusb-0.4.1so.4 and some thing else (sorry im doing this form memory and as im not connected to the net and im having to use some one eles machine) the thing is do I just untar these libusb files and that’s it or do I have to do something else to them. How do I install this libusb. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

After you unpack the source code, you have to configure, compile, link, and install it.

Is there a particular reason that you aren't installed gphoto2 from the Ubuntu repositories? Installing the deb file will automatically manage the dependencies.
