When i install GLIBC-2.4 it gives me ERROR :

*** On GNU/Linux systems the GNU C Library should not be installed into
*** /usr/local since this might make your system totally unusable.
*** We strongly advise to use a different prefix. For details read the FAQ.

Debian Etch : I'll guess that changing glibc from version 2.3.6
to 2.4 will make your system unusable.
(The glibc in Etch is "libc6-2.3.6")
No harm done with compiling, just do not install.

Still : I think your system will stop working, if you do it.
You already have the glibc, that works with your system.
So you can go as far as 'make' but no 'make install' into your system.
Wrong glibc = > no programs, no terminal will work, you cannot shut down,
and never start up again.
Glibc is "the nerve" of the system.
