Angry Installing gcc 2.95.3 on Red Hat 7.0

i am having condsiderable troubles getting this older version of gcc to install. When i installed red hat, i unchecked all of the gcc packages because that later version (2.96 and 3.0) are extremely buggy. So, i unzip and untar the source file, ran the configure in a seperate empty directory, like the instructions told me, and that ran fine. then i typed "make bootstrap" in the directory i ran configure in, and in one or two places along the way i get a warning message:

/home/quen/gcc-2.95.3/gcc/toplev.c:1179: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type

i get six or seven of those in a row. i also get:

cxxmain.c:4527: warning: assignment discards qualifiers from pointer target type

i get this twice in a row. all of the files are in /home/quen/gcc... i don't know if that makes a difference or not. this is just small cookies up until now... now i get:

mv: cannot stat `crtbeginS.o': No such file or directory

make[2]: [stage1-start] Error 1 (ignored)
mv intl/*.o stage1/intl
mv: cannot stat `intl/*.o': No such file or directory
make[2]: [stage1-start] Error 1 (ignored)

then it continues to compile, and i get the first warning message again. there are seven or 8 of them yet again. Then it seems to loop back through, and i get the exact same errors in the exact same order. Then, after yet another long while, i get:

/home/quen/gcc-2.95.3/gcc/f/com.c:1599: warning: unused parameter `expr2'

and, despite all of that, it still created the makefile for the make install. I know enough about c++ to know that i shouldn't be getting those warnings, or errors.
Am i doing something wrong? Or is this perfectly normal? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.
