Installing GCC 2.95.3

Hi all. Just as a intro, I want to say that I'm not overly unfamilar with Linux. Even so, GCC 2.95.3 is a nightmare to install. It doesn't come with any instructions, and the official GCC website instructions make no sense at the same time as initiating an information overload.

I normally wouldn't bother with GCC, but MPlayer requires it.

Can someone give me installation instructions in plain English?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Shoal

PS - I'm using Mandrakelinux 10, GNOME desktop.

use these instructions

so you don't end up messing up your current version of gcc in the process
this is not to say gcc2 will compile on your system we are getting pretty far away from gcc2 now
but it's worth a shot..

I am curious why you say MPlayer needs gcc2 ???????
i compiled MPlayer just fine with gcc 3.3.1

this might help for MPlayer
though it is older than your system and is not done with the new kernel/glibc headers
it also might work and works with newer gcc

I haven't tried your suggestion yet, but it looks much more clear. Thanks!

As for why 2.95.3, the documentation for MPlayer 1.0 says that the later versions of GCC creates corrupt code within MPlayer. It strongly suggests using GCC 2.95.3, even though versions 3.2+ seem to work fine with it.

Thanks,

I take it back. These instructions aren't working, either.

It tells you to install the patches first, which makes no sense. But, giving Linux the benefit of the doubt, I tried installing them anyway. They wanted a specific file to patch, and the instructions didn't say. Okay, onto the next section.

Make the gcc-build directory, then go there. Check. Next section.

I typed in exactly what was presented (seeing as I had a folder in / called gcc-2.95.3). It popped up that config.guess failed to recognize my host type. Wha...?

Thanks,

Shoal
