Installing firefox from terminal window

Downloaded the latest version

$ cd ~/
$ wget http://ftp-mozilla.netscape.com/pub/...2.0.0.6.tar.gz

Then unpacked it into home directory

$ tar xvzf firefox-2.0.0.6.tar.gz

Now since I'm creating a kiosk X windows hasn't got anything bar a terminal window

So I did the following

# chown -R root:root /home/kiosk/firefox/

then started X

and in theory you should be able to type

$ ~/firefox/firefox

which said unknown command so I went striaght into the firefox directory and tried the same and still got the same response. So I think Firefox needs installing via script. There is a script file but I can't get this to run either.

Any ideas???

Did you try to compile it before?

I think I had a doh moment.

Perhaps ./firefox would work. I'll try tomorrow as the machine is at work.

If you cd to the directory created when you unpacked the tarball and say "./firefox", that should work. If it doesn't, use "pwd" to check that you are in the right directory and use "ls" to check that there is an executable file "firefox" there. If not, find it somehow. If it's there, then "./firefox" is sure to either bring up firefox or else give you a meaningful error message.

Have you checked that the file "firefox" is executable, and that the user you are trying to execute it as has permission to execute it?

If your system is capable of running Firefox it should also be capable of running the Firefox installer, which should install Firefox properly and avoid these problems.

I'm a bit confused about why you're trying to install Firefox in the home directory of "kisok", but owned by root. It is conventional for everything inside a user's home directory to be owned by that user. If you don't want it to be owned by "kiosk" then it should be placed somewhere other than in this user's home directory.
