installing eth0 failure

hi-
i am using redhat 6.2 and installation seemed to go quite well, but I get an 'interface eth0' failure notice when booting. everything seems to work fine and xserver runs video and all seems to work fine...until I try to shutdown. whether in setup mode or after starting x, once a command is given to shut x down, the computer freezes completely, all kbd function disabled and monitor goes into 'out of range' mode. at this point i have to shut down power for a cold reboot. computer is a compaq pressario running win98 and linux with boot magic.

Check if you have compiled in the driver for the ethernet card on your system.
