Installing CVS on fc4

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this I'm trying to install/configure CVS on fc4. I did an rpm -q cvs and it displayed that cvs-1.11.19 is installed so i know it exists. Then i followed a set of instructions; initialized the repository, added a cvspserver file in /etc/xinetd.d:

#default: off
#description: A cvs server.

service cvspserver
{
disable = no
port = 2401
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
user = root
wait = no
server = /usr/bin/cvs
server_args = -f --allow-root=/home/cvs/repository pserver
log_on_success +=USERID
log_on_failure += USERID
}

checked the /etc/services file for cvspserver 2401/tcp and udp and they exist, restarted xinetd, added the line CVSROOT="server:$USER@localhost:/home/cvs/repository" and so on and made sure that everything is running okay but when i run the command echo $CVSROOT from a cvs user i get a blank return i.e. i don't get the supposed return server:cvsuser@localhost:/home/cvs/repository.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling cvs through yum, changing the line CVSROOT="server:$USER@localhost:/home/cvs/repository" to export CVSROOT="server:$USER@localhost:/home/cvs/repository", changing the permissions and nothing seems to be working. I even tried to download and install cvs1.11.21 but when i run the ./configure, make, and make install commands to install it and run rpm I get cvs not installed.

I followed similar instructions when i had fc5 installed and it worked just fine never gave me any problem. I'm trying it now on fc4 and it doesn't seem like it wants to work. Can someone please help me out?

thank you very much in advance.
