Installing AIM

Hey, i compiled and installed aim from source and get the following error message when i run it:

mike@ttyp0[/]$ /usr/bin/aim
/usr/bin/aim: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-lib6.1-1.so.2:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
mike@ttyp0[/]$

its clear that i'm missing a lib file or two, but it supposedly installed the lib files with aim...
any suggestions would help...i really don't like gaim, and just want to get aim running.

You most likely need to install the compat packages for libstdc++ in order for aim to compile and work correctly.

You may want to take a look at gaim and kopete which are good im clients for multiple protocols.

and the easiest way to install a package is using a package manager like apt-get (debian) , urpmi (mandrake) , yum (fedora,redhat,..)

The user did mention he didn't like gaim, hence the reason he only wants aim installed..

And package managers might be nice and easy, but in this situation don't help the user. Clearly they're trying to install by source, so fixing their actual error message would be higher priority than pointing out that package managers would make it easier for them.. ;)

Kopete is one of the best packages out there for chatting. You can be logged into several different chat systems at the same time all within a single program. I use it and I am logged into MSN and Yahoo concurrently from within that single program. If I wanted I could log into AIM as well, but I don't like AIM accounts.
