Are you talking about a distro, some software or what? Please be specific.

Is this Ubuntu? You don't specify which distro, and are you wanting to do a complete overhaul? They are very different OS's by now. They also use different kernels.

Welcome to LQ!

I assume you are talking about Ubuntu. Your best bet for such a big jump in upgrades is to do a clean install.

Just put the CD in (assuming you have the normal desktop CD), and boot from it. This will start up as a Live CD, and to install Ubuntu just click the "Install" link on the desktop.

Make sure you backup all your documents.

If you haven't already, create a separate partition during installation for /home. This makes it easier to do upgrades and reinstalls in the future.

I hope this helps

Sorry

You all are very fast, i can tell this will be a very helpful forum.

Sorry about the edgy details, let me fill in a little more.

I was running windowns xp and my system crashed. I couldnt find my xp cd so i thought the heck with it ill give linux a try, could be fun.

Since i dont have a dvd player i couldnt use the newer version i had so i used an older 4.10 ubuntu cd. Now i got my computer back and running by formatting and starting fresh with linux, but i wanna upgrade to the newer version. So rather then having to get each upgrade from where i am at 4.10 to the newest version i thought i would just download and install. Tell me if this is not possiable. I dont really wanna wait around for a cd although i know it would probably be less work.

But i downloaded and im trying to figure out how to run it.

thanks! i will check back frequently!

Eric

Is it an iso file? Right click-properties. (also called raw-image). You can have Ubuntu's office send you a free CD as well...see here.

Do you have another HDD you can hook up? Other than that, you would have to get a free CD sent to you (it is legitimate), and then that would insure a good iso and CD.
