installing

when i install a new software is it installed by default in /usr/local or i have to set --prefix to /usr/local?

It depends on the software. If you do a ./configure, usually it will show you what the prefix is going ot be for where the software will be installed.

Where a package is installed varies from package to package depending on where the developer chooses to install it.
