I just downloaded it, how can I open it? keeps asking for a file.
I have dual Boot Win XP and Linux Mandrake. I don't know almost anything about linux (as you can see I can't even install kopete) but I want to wipe out Win XP and stay in Mandrake. But to do so, I need software that can let me deal with my daily matters. Perhaps you know any of these and recommend me to download. So I need these Linux equivalents:
Photoshop
Office (I already have OpenOffice, is it the best?)
MSN (sorry, yes, but it's VITAL at my school)
Dreamwaver/FrontPage any site builder.
WinDVD
Modem Support (I have a lap top and I can't install another modem in it)
Java
Lotus Notes
CD-R support
And I believe that's it. Please anyone, help me join you Linux Gang.
Photoshop: the GIMP (slightly different design philosophy, but a couple hours banging around and you should be set. Alternatively, you can purchase CrossOver Office plugin and use photoshop natively.
Office: I find Koffice easier to use, but OpenOffice is more similar and has better compatibility to Microsoft office. I have both installed, as I need to transfer files back & forth between home and school.
MSN: I've used Everybuddy, GAIM and Kopete - everybuddy is now dead, with a couple of projects inheiriting the code, but I haven't tried them out. GAIM is quite good, but Kopete I find easier to use. Both programs include support for MSN, Yahoo, AOL, IRC, Gadu-Gadu, and other chat protocals
Dreamweaver/Frontpage: There's no real Dreamweaver clone here, although Quanta Plus is reportedly a fantastic html editor. Bluefish is a basic editor, but it works. Almost every text editor on linux has code highlighting and other such features, and the Mozilla project has a GUI-based editor I believe.
WinDVD: I've used Xine and MPlayer; both are good, I prefer Xine for usability but I managed to build from source a customized version of MPlayer with Quicktime codecs, divx, xvid and all-regions dvd-playing capability. Note, however, that most of those features are _not_ in the default install (due to licensing/legal reasons) however, mplayer's homepage has a decent tutorial if you're willing to spend an evening piecing it together. The end result is worth it (however, don't forget like i did to '--enable-gui')
Modem support-Linux has pretty good modem support, however it can have issues with so-called 'winmodems' - there are plenty of good tutorials online, start with linmodems.org, also see if your distribution supports your brand of modem
Java: Definately supported. Get the packages from Sun, or the rebuilt 'blacksun?' (think that's correct) package, also there is 'Kaffe' which is an unofficial Java VM
Lotus Notes: Sorry, don't have a clue what this is, can't help you there.
CD-R Support: Definately, and with the advent of K3B it's super-easy too, although there are other fantastic software packages out there as well. I believe the Nautilus file manager actually has support for a cd-writing module (a la WinXP ...haven't tried it myself however, I don't use GNOME very often)
thanks thanks a lot!!!!!! I'll definitely try them out. I'm thinking really seriously about wipe out Win and just keep linux after what I've heard about Micfosoft and it's attemps againts Java (I'm a Java lover ) If I ever have questions I know I can count on you
