Installed Kazaa Lite on Linux w/ Wine, but...

Here is the output when I attempt to launch Kazaa Lite...
After this output the Kazza window comes up just like it does in Winblows but it locks up right away.

Haaha. No-one except the Wine developers can actually debug this. Wine is a great idea, but developing it is like shooting a moving target on a bouncy castle.

Sorry chrisknight, but I've never known anyone to get Kazaa to run on Wine. In fact I've only once got WIne to run anything.

Give it up. Try using GTK-Gnutella instead or dual boot back into Windows to use Kazaa.

The key portion here is the line that says "Unhandled exception". From general experience, this most often means one or more DLLs are incompatible with what the application is trying to do. For example, if an application needs to use Oleaut32.dll and is expecting the Windows 98 version of that DLL, it can return an unhandled exception if it encounters a WinXP version of that DLL instead.

An unhandled exception can also mean a lack of adequate RAM or a conflict with another program that is running at the time, so you might look in those directions, but I think your DLL versions are suspect. Have you gotten the Windows system DLLs from various sources, or did they all come from CAB files on a Windows CD? This can also be caused by two different DLLs which are incompatible with each other.

Wine tends to work better with Win98/ME files than with 2k/XP files, so you if you have access to a Win98 CD you might consider replacing all the DLLs (but it would have to be all of them, or you would likely experience the same sort of problem).

Q*Bert, I disagree. Wine is capable of running many Windows applications. It has its inherent limitations, and no doubt there are many things that it cannot run, but most problems people experience are due to incorrect setup, such as using different DLL versions.

Oh yes, you're probably right. It just seems like getting it to work properly (for example entering the dll hell) seems like far too much trouble for the sake of the desired functionality in many cases.

I have a collection of dll's that TheWhizzard gave me from justlinux.com . I use that and the default wine reg file (goto wine's website) and then install Kazaa Lite (it doesn't work with version 2, only works with version 1.7).

Here's the link for downloading the dll's, my server isn't on 24/7, i'll be on for atleast for the next 4 hours. Make sure you use a downloader that resumes. Its about 40Mb.

http://mooktaking.homeip.net/win98.tar.gz

Give me a PM if that link is broken, its hard to test it when you have a router in between

Do exactly what it says in this howto:

http://www.christian-gerner.de/computer/linux/kazaa.htm

Follow the "Howto install KaZaA Version 2?" part and edit your config file (including the win98 bit). After that just installl kazaa lite.

Also you should consider installing eDonkey and/or giFT. I have all three installed. eDonkey has millions of files but sometimes they are broken link. giFT is great but not enough users shraing files.

MooktaKiNG, thanks! I haven't tried to set up Kazaalite in Wine yet, and I'm sure you've saved me some problems when I do.

Q*Bert, I know how you feel. Setting up Wine isn't trivial, but I decided to take it on and plow through. I really don't like having Windows installed on my machine.

I won't be able to download right now, since I'm at work and have no way to get a file that large home. (Carelessly, I missed the part that said the server wasn't up all the time. :/ ) I'll email you within the next 48 hours to see whether you'll have the server up for awhile. I really appreciate the offer. I'm emailing this message too in case you don't see it here.

HI,
the only program I use windows for is kazaa and you say it's hard to run it under wine!

I tried few things and kazaa runs but as it starts connecting it crashes
Kazaa says:
Cannot continiue because of a hardware or system error.
Sorry, but this error is unrecovorable.

wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0009), starting debugger...

I also get this wine message trying to run other apps like Dreamweaver3 - what does it mean?
Which is this thread 0009 - it's always the same message! And are these messages linked together or are they different issues!

Can I use the win-binaries and dll's from read-only partitions?

For information I successfully run Photohop 6 and VisualThought that helps me much but I really nead Kazaa most of all

Thanks

Here's a little tip for people that want to use Wine. Go find Linux equivilents, because that will save you a lot of headaches. For example, get LimeWire, which is faster than KaZaA and KaZaA Lite anyway, or get one of the many other file=sharing clients including gtk-gnutella, xmule, and many more like that. However, I reccomend LimeWire basic.

kazza like can be easily be replaced in linux. There are a number of different alternatives.

My favourite is giFT. Its a server based p2p. Basicly you run giFT, as a daemon. Then you can run which ever client you want. and there a number of different client out there that can satisfy everyone. http://gift.sourceforge.net/

I personal favourite client is giftcurs, which is CLI based and is great looking.
and i also like http://apollon.sourceforge.net/ which looks a lot like kazaa Lite and i believe it has interface for mplayer, to preview all the movie files
I also like it becuase it uses QT, and it looks great.

There a number of clients, an interesting one is a webbased client
http://gift.sourceforge.net/clients.php

Take a look here:

http://www.me.berkeley.edu/~sushil/k...nux_HOWTO.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/.../msg03179.html
http://www.merlinux.org/merfaq/kazaa...1_english.html

I've installed kazaa sucessfully many many times and there are lots of guides out there. It depends on the version of kazaa and wine you use. Sometimes it depends on your luck.
