Installation help.

I'm having trouble installing my wireless network thing on my Linux computer.

More details in an older thread, so I'd like to redirect you there if you think you can help:

Thanks.

ndiswrapper

Here is a webpage which may help you

http://knolinux.com/2006/10/16/mandr...om-france.aspx

I apologize for its length, but i am not familiar with Mandrake, and it does seem to eventually discuss in-depth how to get the wireless card working (you can skim down to that portion or do a page search to get there faster).

It mentions that ndiswrapper is enabled by default in Mandrake 2007. This application allows you to make use of the windows drivers for the device (the needed windows driver files, as mentioned, are those ending in .sys and .inf).

Another thing you may wish to try is to go to a linux forum entirely devoted to Mandrake, perhaps

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/mandriva-linux-help/

or

http://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showforum=14

Posting to these may get you more assistance. Hope this helps.

ehawk, I read the relevant part off the first link you gave, but when I tried to install my wireless that way I got asked to insert the media installation DVD.

I assumed this was the disk I installed Mandriva off, but I couldn't find the file it asked for. I fear it could be because the disk I installed off came free with a magazine (Linux User & Developer issue 67)

No, I have a feeling the installation disk referred to may be the windows installatin disk or diskette that came with the hardware you wish to install (not the windows OS installation disk). Instead of opening the windows installation wizard, however, I think it should be possible to find the .inf and .sys files referred to in the relevant web page. Remember, ndiswrapper will be making use of the windows driver. Again, I have not done this myself, so perhaps others will offer additional assistance. Another thing you can do is go to the manufacturers website and download the .sys and .inf files that are normally used in windows installation of this piece of hardware to a known directory/folder, then direct the procedure to those files instead of the installation disk.

If your piece of hardware did not come with an installation disk, that means that the driver is built into the windows OS itself, and in that case, you might be able to find the .sys and .inf files on the windows OS installation disk, or from a MS help site/forum.
