i'm using wine to install microsoft office on linux.. after i enter the key, its running for some time and then ending abrupting with an error.
should i configure anything else in wine so that the installation can be completed smoothly???
A quick glance at the office installations under wine at www.winehq.com suggests that there are some known steps to take: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=3214. Might be worth checking out what people have tried, and how much success they've had.
Otherwise, is there any reason you absolutely need Microsoft office? Have you considered OpenOffice? I would venture to suggest that installing that would be significantly easier.
Not to mention that Open Office feels a lot like MSOffice, except a little better (export to pdf, etc) Even on windows I use OpenOffice to the exclusion of MSOffice.
Running MSOffice on a Linux machine is most succesful using Crossover Office. As far as I know it runs flawlessly.
With Wine I have always experienced some larger or smaller problems, depending on the application. Unfortunately less than 100% compatibility usually seriously degrades the usability of an application.
The best solution so far for Windows apps you _must_ have is VMWare. WMWare is free, provided you have a Window$ license.
As for OpenOffice, document compatability is not flawless, headings, spaces, frames and tables move when opening and saving MSWord format. OO as such using the .ODT format is wonderful. Headings, styles and heading numbering simply *work*, and I have never been able to do that in Word for 13 years. (Not that I did not know how to do that, but usually ending up with chapter 2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 instead of chapter 3)
