btw/fyi, assuming your Dell XT3 runs M$Windoze, and since you are a Linux/ns2 beginner,
VirtualBox might be an easier way.

The OLD Ubu11/12 .vdi (pre-installed! .iso) might be found

This way, you can simply 'run' Linux as a PC 'app'!
